What does a typical day look like?

We deal with different people, different challenges and receive different rewards every single day. One of the things I love about my job is that I’m always on my toes and waiting for the next opportunity to help someone. Not a day has gone by at work where I don’t feel like I’ve made a difference and that is very fulfilling.


What are the best things about your role?

The most rewarding aspect of my work is knowing that I can make a difference in helping others feel confident in our services and allowing everyone the best possible vision. I get a sense of accomplishment every time I hear a customer comment on how good the team is here.

We really do pride ourselves on our exceptional customer service. So when I see a satisfied customer collecting their glasses or we’re able to resolve an issue they have, that gives me a real buzz. Fortunately for me, the rest of the team here are every bit as passionate and committed as I am about providing the best service to each and every customer.

Describe the culture of your store

The culture within our store is very positive and the whole team at Ringwood are so supportive and friendly. They make my day, every day.

It’s a privilege to be their manager. We have very diverse staff in terms of their personalities and cultural influences but everyone is very respectful of those differences. We’re actually quite a like-minded bunch, happy and willing to go the extra mile for every customer.

The work itself can be a little challenging at times, but to the whole team’s credit, we always stay focused on the positives and the task at hand. The Ringwood team has helped me develop and I can honestly say, I wouldn’t be where I am now if it weren’t for them.

How have you developed?

I first joined Specsavers as a part time pre-tester while I was studying at university. I enjoyed working at Ringwood so much – especially taking Digital Retinal Photographs and learning more about the eye’s anatomy – that I left my university course to join Specsavers full time.

That was back in October 2012, and since then I have developed my skills through various onsite training courses, as well as courses based at the Support Office and a Cert IV in Optical Dispensing at RMIT. Studying at RMIT and developing my skills on the job, I quickly learned how to interpret people’s prescriptions and identify customers’ individual needs.

Towards the end of 2013, I was promoted to the role of a Store Manager and then mentored for 6 months by an experienced colleague from our Support Office, before being offered a place on the Pathway program. The Pathway program is a Partner in Development program which you go through to become a Joint Venture Partner. I’m now looking forward to owning and running a Joint Venture Partner store of my own.

What makes you most proud of your time so far at Specsavers?

Whenever I can use my knowledge and experience to a make a real difference to someone’s life.

For example, one of our regular patients who is hearing impaired recently came in for an adjustment to his glasses. When I questioned him more closely, he wrote down symptoms that immediately alerted me to the fact there could be a problem with his vision.

I immediately took him through to see the optometrist, sat in on the consultation and sure enough he was then referred onto an ophthalmologist for diagnosis. If he’d gone to anyone other than us, there’s a good chance that problem wouldn’t even have been picked up in the first place.

The trainers will leave no stone unturned to educate you in the most relevant aspects of your Pathway journey. Pathway will challenge you professionally and personally, you will need to re-examine your priorities and really focus on what sort of Director you want to be. You will have greater confidence in your own ability to manage staff effectively and to run a busy Optical practice. I won’t lie, the assessments are tough but really showcase how much you have learned and developed in such a short time
