What makes you most proud of your time at Specsavers?
As I have been here for 6 and a half years I am extremely proud when a customer comes back into the store and remembers me and in return I remember them. It is extremely rewarding because you have provided them with such a professional service that they continue to visit and it feels great to help improve customers’ eye health. It’s a humbling feeling.
I love being a part of a team and we all play a vital part in the customers’ journey. I'm so proud that we all work as a team to help our customers feel comfortable and I we are delivering the best customer service possible. The team welcomes new members with great enthusiasm and pass on the knowledge we have gained. Each member of our team is made to feel comfortable, supported and are all equipped with the necessary information to succeed.
What are the best things about your role?
The best thing is working with everyone in the Specsavers team, from the newest team member, to the directors and head office. As well as interacting with other team members I really enjoy serving the public with the knowledge I have learnt and understand the reason that they need their appointment/new glasses. I feel a great sense of achievement at the end of the customers’ journey when they are happy with the result.
The next best thing would be helping and training the new staff. I take great pride in educating the new staff members and giving them all the tools and information needed to work to the best of their ability. Knowing that I have been involved with that process and helped successfully integrate a new member into the team is great.
How have you developed?
When I started at Specsavers 6 and a half years ago I had no prior experience within the optical industry and I am grateful I to have had the opportunity to learn so much about this particular area. I have attended training sessions at Head Office and still continue to receive training in store.
I started by only making appointments and progressed into pretesting visual fields, visual acuity and administering drops for the dilation process. I now train new staff in this field and I am reminded of how far I have come when I pass on my knowledge.
I now have more responsibilities such as managing stock which includes case and accessory orders. Due to our practice having two stores I also manage the phone hub and this has improved my communication skills with the customers. I have grown in confidence and have the ability to immediately recognise customers’ needs and provide professional advice.
Describe the culture.
The team at Specsavers are a great team to work with as we all try to help each other where needed. We have a morning huddle where everyone will be allocated their main task for the day whether it is dispensing, pretesting, collections or meet and greet. A weekly hour long meeting is in place to discuss problems or situations that may have come up and how they should be dealt with creating a supportive culture. The meetings provide a great opportunity to listen to everyone's views and ideas on things as everybody in the team has a voice.
We receive continuous training and are kept up to date with new products and promotions. The directors are always on hand to help the store run as smoothly as possible. We have a very friendly team at Specsavers Fountain Gate and the relationships are not limited to the work environment. We have work outings for special events and occasions and this makes us closer as a team.
Why would you recommend a career at Specsavers?
I feel that Specsavers is an excellent company to work for. Optometry is a field that will always be needed and as an individual you continue to learn as you develop in your career.
To start you will learn to read prescriptions, dispense glasses and have an understanding of customer needs. If you want to take study further you have the opportunity to obtain a Certificate 4 in Optical Dispensing with the support of the store directors. Working with Specsavers is a great opportunity to always learn new things and to be around staff with so much knowledge. I hope to continue to work at Specsavers till the end of my working life. It is definitely a long term career.
