What makes you most proud of your time at Specsavers?

I am really proud to be a part of the Training and Development team as a whole. I started as a Regional Trainer in Queensland and I have had the pleasure of being involved in this team throughout my career at Specsavers. I get a real kick out of seeing our employees develop and enjoy watching their continuous improvement.

The biggest thrill for me is after a training or coaching session, the improvement I see from our team members in-store. I enjoy taking people with no previous optical knowledge and giving them the skills they need to assist our customers to improve their vision

What are the best things about your role?

The best thing about my role is that it’s never dull and boring. As the Area Development Manager for Queensland, New South Wales and West Australia, I cover quite a bit of territory which includes leading a team of 9 field trainers who deliver training to 204 Specsavers stores. I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with some really creative and fun individuals that make being part of the team even more enjoyable.

While all Specsavers stores share the same DNA, they all have their differences and it is important to understand every single person has their own unique way of learning. This presents a challenge that my team and I love to work with.

 

How have you developed?

Before I joined Specsavers, I worked in the Optical Industry for around 20 years. Previously I held different roles which varied from manufacturing lenses in a lab to area management. Once, I started at Specsavers I realised there was so much more to learn. Specsavers has given me so much opportunity to develop internally and supported my growth through knowledge. During my time here I was able to complete my Certificate IV in Dispensing and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Not only do they provide you with external training, they also have a great academy internally. My IT skills have improved enormously in comparison to what they were at the start of my career, due to the internal courses in our Support Office.  The use of technology has played a huge part in the way we work in the modern work place and I have fully embraced the opportunity to improve in order to be more effective in my role. 

Asides from partaking in internal courses, my leadership skills have also greatly improved through attending various workshops that have been made available to me. The environment here has helped me to continually progress.

 

Describe the culture

The culture at Specsavers is all about continuous development and having fun. Sure there are expectations but that’s everywhere. I feel I have the freedom to be myself and I’m constantly encouraged to be the best version of me; making me feel appreciated as a Specsavers employee.

Why would you recommend a career at Specsavers?

I truly would recommend Specsavers to anyone who is looking for a career that will present plenty of exciting opportunities. From working in store, you can progress through to a qualification in Optical Dispensing, Supervisor and Management roles. You can even own your own store! Alternatively you could utilise your skills and work in the Support Office. For those who are looking to join the support teams, there are plenty of avenues for you to explore and you will never be short of an opportunity. In fact, development is actively encouraged here so you will never feel like you are not moving forward in your career.
