What makes you most proud of your time so far at Specsavers?
The thing I’m most proud of is probably the difference it’s made to me as an individual. My outlook on everything – both work and life in general – is so much more positive since I started working here. Partly, I suppose, because I’ve been able to achieve goals that I would never have thought possible working elsewhere.
It’s always rewarding when you work in such a fantastic team environment and get through the daily tasks with ease. I’ve also been able to pass this positive attitude on to my colleagues, which I know has helped them in their personal lives too. It’s great to see the bigger picture when colleagues share stories about the successes they’ve achieved and the happiness they’ve found in their lives outside work.
What are the best things about your role?
It might sound strange, but I think the best thing about being Warehouse Manager at Specsavers is that I don’t just work in the warehouse. I also get to work with a few other departments, which enables me to learn more about how the business operates. Even when I am in the warehouse, I work closely with many different areas of the business, which has helped to broaden my knowledge of the company as a whole.
Another aspect of the role I enjoy is travelling to our warehouse in New Zealand and having a big input on the work our team does there. I’ve been able to get over there relatively frequently and it’s great to see the positive impact I’ve had on their working methods, processes and procedures. If I manage to grab a little free time when I’m there, the scenery and sights in NZ are lovely too.
How have you developed?
When I made the move to Specsavers, I knew it would be a big challenge. The warehouse set-up was still fairly new at the time and they were looking for someone to come across and improve the processes and procedures they had in place. When I look back now, I realise that challenge was probably the main reason I decided to make the move.
Whatever the case, it was certainly the right decision. It took a good few months, during which time the company was continuing to grow at pace. But with plenty of support from the business, a positive, progressive working environment and an amazing team of people around me, I was able to transform how the entire warehouse operation is run.
Describe the culture
When I started, the warehouse team were struggling to keep up with the growing demands of the business. Together, We’ve managed to change all that and I’ve really enjoyed getting colleagues throughout the warehouse to work together and support each other rather than just their immediate teams.
As a result of becoming more flexible and multi-skilled, I think everyone enjoys their job a lot more.
Why would you recommend a career at Specsavers?
I’d recommend Specsavers because you have the chance to come in and really make a difference. A fresh pair of eyes, a different perspective and new set of ideas are always welcome. A lot of companies want you to work their way and do things the same as they’ve always been done. Specsavers also has a great working environment with a lot of support to keep us a successful company.
