What does a typical day look like?

I actually have two what you might call ‘typical days’. And I enjoy them both for different reasons.

The first are my clinical days where I’m in the test room. I see a high proportion of children and have a lovely client-base of families in Sunbury who I’ve been looking after for many years.

The second are where I focus on the business - reviewing our achievements, looking at our KPI’s and customer service measures. These days also include various meetings such as team leader meetings and catch-ups with other members of the team who are responsible for specific areas of the business.

What are the best things about your role?

The best thing about my role as a Specsavers Director is working with my store team to achieve a common goal. I find it very rewarding watching each team member grow, rise to the challenge they’ve been given and achieve their goals. We are very well supported by the training and information events given by head office, which gives us the tools to improve our businesses.

Beyond helping my own team to develop, one of the most stimulating things I’ve done during my time here is work with Graduates – both as part of the Graduate Program itself and mentoring individuals at my practice to become independent and skilled optometrists.

Describe the culture of your store

My Retail Partner and team of retail and optometry staff are very friendly and supportive. Together, we have created a culture of support, high performance and constructive feedback. They are so diverse in their personalities, life experiences and backgrounds but they all believe in Customer First and Kai Zen (continual improvement). They are also very flexible in trying new things and changing things if they aren’t working.

Just as important, to my mind, is the culture of Specsavers as a business. It’s a forward-thinking organisation that’s never afraid to be innovative. There’s a great belief in training and the company has invested heavily in the training Academy for all areas of the business. The spirit in which Specsavers conducts business and interacts with store partners gives you confidence in the company.

How have you developed?

I’ve been a director at Specsavers Sunbury since 2008 and had the privilege of working as a regional Mentor with the Graduate/Professional Development team until 2010. Since, then as my practice has grown, I’ve concentrated on the development of my own team of retail and Optometry staff.

What makes you most proud of your time so far at Specsavers?

One way I’ve certainly made a real difference to my customers is through my paediatric optometry skills. I have a wonderful relationship with the local school nurses, maternal nurses and staff at early development clinics who all refer children to me.

I’m proud to provide special care and honest advice to some of the youngest members of our community. They, their parents and guardians put a lot of trust in me. l particularly love building a rapport with either autistic children and those who simply find it hard to communicate. One young girl I first saw when she was three years old needed three visits just to get the initial tests done. The first two just to play and build trust. I knew she had a turned eye and a lazy eye so I couldn’t give up on her.

She’s now 13 and bounds into the test room. Her eyes are straight, I can’t stop her talking and she wants to try contact lenses. A little patience early on has certainly paid off there.
